Many users have reported receiving unsolicited email (SPAM) over the holiday break that appeared to come from their own UF email address leading many to believe that their UF account had been compromised and was being used to generate these messages. Unfortunately, it's very easy to forge the 'From' address in an email header and is a common tactic of those who send spam. May 15th, 2008: OpenSSL Vulnerability in Debian-based Linux systems

VULNERABILITY:
A vulnerability in the OpenSSL implementation has been discovered that affects Debian-based Linux systems. The flaw impacts all SSH and SSL keys generated on those systems between September 2006 and May 2008. While the flaw directly impacts users of OpenSSH, OpenSSL and OpenVPN on Debian-based systems, it also affects other Linux systems where an SSH key or SSL certificate was created on a Debian-based system and then transferred for use on another Linux system.

Debian-based Linux systems: http://www.debian.org/misc/children-distros

THREAT IMPACT:
UF is the target of SSH scans constantly. Tools were released last night that make bruteforcing all possible keys very easy. If your system is vulnerable, it's only a matter of time before your system is compromised using one of these keys.

SOLUTION:
Most vendors had already put out updated openssl-based packages. Update your system to the latest patches and regenerate your SSH keys and SSL certificates. Note, patching alone is not enough to protect against this vulnerability. SSH keys and SSL certificates should be regenerated as well.

Ubuntu has created openssl-blacklist, openssh-blacklist and openvpn-blacklist, which contain a listing of vulnerable keys that are "blacklisted" and can be used with the openssl-vulnkey tool to scan your system for weak keys. Additionally, if you don't need SSH open to the entire world, either turn it off or limit what IP addresses can connect to it. Consider using either port knocking to hide your SSH server and tools such as fail2ban and psad to block IPs that repeatedly fail to authenticate.

UFIRT SCANNING:
The UF IT Security Team will be conducting vulnerability scans against SSH servers on the UF network and notifications will be sent to respective admins. Scans will originate from one of our scanners named authorized-scanner-X.ns.ufl.edu where X can be 0-4. These IPs are within 128.227.128.52/30.
