Events in 2009

• Cyber Self-Defense Class    [slides]   [handout]

  March 23, 1:30 - 3:30pm, Kathy Bergsma

  This session is designed to raise awareness of faculty and staff on topics including safe Web browsing, malware threats, e-mail safety, choosing a good password, encrypting and backing up files, and wireless security. The class is very interactive with discussion topics that get the participants thinking about how to protect their personal computers.

• Peer2Peer: New UF IT Security Policies Announced

  Kathy Bergsma, UF's IT Security Manager, will be discussing UF's new IT Security Policies. New time and date to be announced soon!

• Achilles Training Sessions Scheduled for March, April and May 2008
  March 2008: 19th & 21st; April 2008: 14th & 16th; May 2008 TBD

  UF will soon implement a significant update to the IT risk assessment standard. The new standard requires all units to perform a comprehensive risk assessment at least once every five years. The Office of Information Security Management has created a Web-based tool named "Achilles" to help units conduct risk assessments. The next series of hands-on Achilles training will be offered in the CITT computer training lab (2215 Turlington Hall) in March, April and May. You will learn how to use Achilles to help build risk profiles and how to develop a mitigation strategy from the risk profiles. After completing the course, you should be able to manage an IT risk assessment for your unit.

• Course on Handling Private Data Presented at Human Resources
  March 6, 2008, 9 am to 10:30 am; June 9, 2008 Time TBD

  Kathy Bergsma will be offering a class, "Cyber Protection of UF Restricted Data" at the HRS Building, 903 West University Ave, Room 120. See the Human Resource Services Spring 2008 Course Schedule to register.

  The University of Florida is obligated to protect private data. Failure to protect private data impacts UF liability, reputation, and costs. This introductory course will explain the do's and don'ts of using private data on computers. Attendees will learn when to use encryption. Proper methods for disposal of private data will be taught. You will learn what to do in the event of a private data exposure. Important contacts regarding private data will be presented and technical resources for data protection will be discussed.

• DEFCON "Capture-The-Flag" Winners Discuss How & Why
  March 27, 2007
• How can hacking skills be used to help secure UF's IT systems? Come March 27th, to hear first-hand from UF Network Security Engineers how they took top honors at "the largest underground hacking event in the world," and how they use their "ski11z" to protect UF's information technology assets against threats.

• C-SAFE: Cyber Security Awareness for Everyone
  April 24, 2007
• The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and SecureFlorida.org are bringing a free, one-day seminar on safe computing practices to the University of Florida Reitz Union Auditorium in Gainesville. C-SAFE: Cyber-Security Awareness for Everyone is hosted by the UF IT Security Team as part of their goal to raise security awareness at UF and in the Gainesville community.

  October 9th & 10th 2007
• This event is primarily hosted by the University of Florida's student organization, Florida Free Culture (FFC). The IT Security Team, the UF Help Desk and Student Government participate. FFC promotes the use of free and open source software. During the FYPC event software, music, and games are distributed to students while their laptops cleaned of viruses and spyware.

• Lightning Talk
  3 Sessions; Oct. 2nd, Oct. 16th, Oct. 30; 11:30a.m. - 1:30p.m.; J. Wayne Reitz Union
• In support of National Cyber Security Awareness Month the UF IT Security team is hosting a series of three "Lightning Talk" sessions scheduled for October 2, 16, and 30. Two-time DefCon War Gamez champions John Sawyer and Jordan Wiens will welcome any and all interested IT professionals to round-table discussions on System Hardening (Oct. 2), Encryption (Oct. 16) and Centralized Log Management (Oct. 30).

• The University of Florida Information Technology Security Team invites you to celebrate with us as we honor two of our team members for their impressive victory at the world's largest annual hacking competition.


• C-SAFE Seminar
  March 1, 2006
• The Cyber Security Awareness for Everyone Seminar is a day-long event presented by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to raise awareness of various Internet crimes and to teach citizens and businesses how to protect themselves from these dangers.

• Incident Response Workshop
  December 14, 2005
• This workshop, which proceeds the June IR Workshop, teaches about the changes to the UF IT Security Incident Reponse Rpoeduces, Standards and Guidelines which were recently implemented by Dr. Marc Hoit, UF VP for Information Technology.
  


• IT Security Awareness Video Contest

• The UF IT Security Team is helping Educause promote an IT Security Awareness Video contest.  This page contains rules and specifications for the contest.

• ITSA Day
  October 12, 2005
  • ITSA Day is presented to teach faculty, staff and students the appropriate measures on safe computing. This link will be updated periodically.
  
  

• Incident Response Workshop
  June 21, 2005
• This workshop is presented to inform UF IT workers about incident response procedures and Florida's new privacy law regarding personal information.
  

• Security Policy Workshop
  April 19, 2005.
  • The UF IT Security Team presented a security policy workshop that outlined and explained the new security policies that apply to all UF departments.

• Identity Theft Session
  March 11, 2005. 
  • This session focused on how to protect your good name, how to spot a scam and how the Internet plays a roll in identity theft.
