Jordan Wiens, Senior Security Engineer
Biography
Jordan Wiens moved to Gainesville in the Fall of 1998 to attend the University of Florida. In 2002, he received a
Bachelors of Science degree in Mathematics. Wiens has lived in Florida all of his adult life, but has also lived in
Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Kansas.
Wiens worked for UF as part-time desktop and server support technician in the College of Health and Human Performance
from 1999-2001 where he first began to get experience in server administration and networking, though he had previous
experience with desktop support, working for Gateway's technical support.
In January, 2001, he accepted a part-time position with the UF IT security team and a year later moved to a full-time IT
Expert position as a Network Security Engineer. In early 2005, Wiens was
promoted to IT Senior within the group. This
job allows Wiens to legally explore his curiosity in hacking while furthering his skills in digital forensics, intrusion
detection systems (IDS), incident response, and other aspects of security.
Wiens has been involved in a number of campus projects including implementing and monitoring security scanners that
allow departments to track servers on its networks as well as some automated notification systems. He is also the
primary architect behind the current UF campus IDS that monitors the campus network for suspicious activity.
Since mid-2003, Wiens has been a Certified Information Systems Security Professional, which highlights his experience
and knowledge in a wide variety of security fields. As a member of the Florida state CIRT (Computer Incident Response
Team), Wiens is available to state and local law enforcement officials as a technical consultant. He has attended and
occasionally presented at various security-related conferences, and has written product reviews and feature articles in
magazines such as Network Computing and InfoWorld.
In his spare time, Wiens enjoys reading and playing video games, and denies being addicted to Gameboy games, though no
one believes him.
He lives with his wife, Jaime, who is a pharmacist in Gainesville.
