UF IT Security Team
Background
In
1999, the University of
Florida’s IT Security Team was started when the first
position dedicated to
information security was created in Network Services, a department of
UF’s
Computing and Networking Services, formally known as NERDC (Northeast
Regional
Data Center).
In April 1999, Kathy Bergsma was hired by UF as the Information Security
Coordinator. Over the next year and a half, she worked with campus IT
workers to
improve information security within the UF network.
The UF IT Security Team became independent from Network Services in
July 2003.
During this transition, Bergsma became UF’s first Information
Security Manager,
a title she still holds. Following this transition, Bersgma started
reporting
directly to the Director of CNS
The security team’s goal is to provide UF information
security and to enhance
the online experience for students, faculty and staff. As
UF’s IT Security
Regulations state, “The mission of the UF information
security program is to
support the goals of UF by assuring the availability, integrity and
appropriate
confidentiality of information. Primary objectives include development
and
implementation of proactive measures to prevent security problems and
effective
response to security problems when prevention methods are
defeated.”
The Office of Information Technology, which was formed in 2001, is the
university’s organization that governs computer standards,
strategic planning
and other IT resources throughout campus. It is at the top of the UF IT
hierarchy and includes the Associate Provost for Information
Technology, the
Office of Academic Technology, CNS and Web Administration.
